Do You Make Shoes For The Whole Family?

Sizing & Fit
How Do I Find My Correct Size?
Finding your perfect fit is super important to us because we want you walking in comfort and style! Here at PaperKrane we have our own unique sizing, so you might find your best fit here differs to your usual size elsewhere.
PaperKrane shoes fit differently than conventional footwear - our barefoot design means a wider toe box and more natural foot shape. Most customers find PK shoes fit true to size. The wider forefoot allows natural toe splay while the heel fits snugly for security.
Please measure your feet and check out our size chart to make sure you get the perfect fit. Questions? Email us if you're unsure or need guidance, we're always happy to help!
How Do I Measure My Feet Correctly?
Getting the right fit starts with an accurate measurement! We've put together detailed instructions on how to measure your feet properly on our size chart pages.
Here's where to find them:
- General Size Chart - for most of our shoes
- Older Soles Size Chart - for our Older Soles range
- Sandal Size Chart - for our sandals
Each chart includes step-by-step instructions to help you measure your feet at home and find your perfect size. It only takes a few minutes and makes all the difference in getting a comfortable fit!
If you're still unsure about sizing after measuring, feel free to reach out to us at contact@paperkrane.com.au, we're happy to help!
My Shoes Feel Too Small, What Should I Do?
If your shoes feel a little snug, here are a few things to try:
First, double-check your size: Measure your feet and compare them to our size chart to make sure you've got the right fit. Sometimes we need a different size than we think!
Try removing the insole: Some of our current adult styles feature removable black insoles that can give you some extra room for a more comfortable fit. Simply pop them out and see if that does the trick!
Give your feet time to adjust: This is especially common for barefoot beginners, your feet may need 1-2 weeks to adjust to the natural freedom of barefoot shoes. This is completely normal and part of strengthening your feet!
If you're still having trouble finding the right fit after trying these tips, feel free to reach out to us, we're here to help!
My Shoes Feel Too Big, What Should I Do?
If your shoes feel a bit roomy, don't worry, this is really common when you're new to or transitioning to barefoot shoes! Barefoot shoes are designed with a wider toe box and more natural space for your feet to move, which can feel quite different from traditional footwear at first.
Check your size first: Measure your feet and compare them to our size chart to make sure you've got the right size. The key measurement is making sure there's about 7-12mm of space from your longest toe to the end of the shoe, this is the "growing room" that allows your toes to spread naturally.
Try adding an insole: If the length is right but the shoes feel a bit too roomy in volume, adding an insole can help take up some of that extra space and create a snugger fit. Check out our barefoot insoles for options that work with your PKs!
Give yourself time to adjust: If the size is correct according to our chart, your feet may just need a little time to get used to the extra space. After wearing traditional narrow shoes, the roomier fit of barefoot shoes can feel unusual at first, but most people quickly come to love the freedom!
If you've checked the size chart and you're still not sure about the fit, please get in touch with us, we're always happy to help you find your perfect pair!

We also have a fantastic range of non-leather shoes, including:

How Thick Are PaperKrane Soles?
Our soles are designed to be minimalist while still protecting your feet!
The breakdown:
- 3-4mm of rubber (including lugs/tread on the bottom)
- 3-4mm of foam inner on the footbed
- Total thickness: approximately 6-8mm
Why so thin?
This minimal thickness is what allows you to really feel the ground beneath your feet—giving you maximum ground connection and natural sensory feedback while still providing protection from sharp objects and rough surfaces. It's the perfect balance between barefoot feel and practical protection!
New to thin soles?
If you're coming from traditional shoes with thick, cushioned soles, our thinner soles might feel different at first. This is completely normal! Your feet will adjust as they strengthen and you'll likely come to love the increased ground feel and natural movement.
Got questions about our shoe construction? We're always happy to chat at contact@paperkrane.com.au!
Is Your Vegan Leather Alternative Really Eco-Friendly?
Yes! Our vegan leather alternative is certified to Global Recycled Standard (GRS) and Recycled Claim Standard (RCS). They're made from recycled synthetic materials and contain no PLAs or forever chemicals - safe for you and the planet.
What Is Your Manufacturing Process & Ethos?
Our shoes are Australian designed and crafted in Vietnam by a wonderful factory that respects traditional handmade shoe techniques, paying homage to the grassroots beginnings of PaperKrane. We ensure that our factory maintains a happy and fair workplace, with workers being paid a fair, living wage and enjoying healthy working conditions.
Additionally, our shoes are thoughtfully made. We use high-quality cow leather and suede, often sourced from dead stock, which are leftover materials from the factory's other projects, to reduce waste. Our vegan products are made from synthetic materials certified to the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) and Recycled Claim Standard (RCS), ensuring they don't contain any PLAs or forever chemicals.
Shoe Care & Maintenance
How Do I Keep My PKs Looking Fresh?
Keep your PKs looking fresh with simple care:
- Spot clean as needed - Use a damp cloth with mild soap for daily maintenance
- Hand wash only - For deeper cleaning, gently hand wash with cold water and mild detergent, then air dry
- Avoid heat and harsh treatments - Never use washing machines, dryers, heaters, dyes, or harsh chemicals
To protect your PaperKrane shoes from the elements, we also recommend using suitable protectants based on the material:
- Kiwi Sneaker Protector for general use
- Collonil Organic Cream for vegan leather
- Oakwood Leather Cream or Collonil Waterstop Colours for leather
For full details, visit our Shoe Protection Guide.
Are PKs Waterproof or Suitable for Snow?
Great question! Here's what you need to know about wearing your PKs in wet conditions:
Water resistance:
Our vegan leather styles are naturally water-resistant, so they can handle light rain and damp conditions without any extra treatment. For all our other styles (including leather, cotton canvas, and suede), we recommend applying a waterproofing spray to help protect them from moisture.
Not suitable for heavy wet weather:
Some materials like cotton canvas and suede are less suitable for wet weather and snow. We don't recommend getting these styles wet or waterlogged, as it can damage the materials and affect the shape and comfort of your shoes.
If your PKs do get wet:
Dry them as soon as possible using a gentle process:
- Remove any excess moisture with a soft, dry cloth
- Stuff them loosely with newspaper or a clean, dry towel to help absorb moisture and maintain their shape
- Let them air dry naturally at room temperature—avoid direct heat sources like radiators, heaters, or hairdryers, as these can damage the materials
- Once dry, you may want to reapply waterproofing spray for extra protection
The bottom line:
PKs are designed for casual, everyday wear. Walking on a sidewalk in winter? Totally fine! Trudging through snow or splashing through puddles? Not so much. If you know you'll be facing serious wet weather or snow, we'd recommend choosing a dedicated weather-resistant shoe for those conditions.
For tips on keeping your PKs in great condition, check out our Shoe Care page!
How Long Will My PKs Last?
With normal casual wear and proper care, your PKs should last you for years!
But it really depends on how you wear them:
The lifespan of your shoes comes down to how heavily they're worn and how well they're looked after. Here's what we've seen from our customers:
- Light to moderate casual wear: Your PKs can last several years with regular use
- Heavy daily wear: We've had customers wear their PKs daily for nursing shifts and they've lasted 5+ years—pretty impressive!
- Tough or rough wear: If you're putting your shoes through particularly rough conditions, they may wear out sooner
- Kids' shoes: Little ones who play hard (as they should!) will naturally wear through their shoes faster than adults
Tips for longer-lasting shoes:
- Follow the care instructions for your shoe's material
- Use waterproofing spray on leather and canvas styles
- Dry them properly if they get wet
- Rotate between pairs if you wear them daily
For more tips on keeping your PKs in great condition, check out our Shoe Care page!
Should I Wear Socks With My Shoes?
Absolutely! While barefoot shoes work great without socks, many customers prefer wearing them for comfort or hygiene, and we actually recommend it!
Why wear socks?
Wearing socks helps keep your PKs fresh for longer. After all, it's much easier to wash socks than shoes! Plus, socks can add a bit of extra comfort and warmth when you need it.
What type of socks work best?
For the best barefoot experience, we recommend thin, non-cushioned socks. Thick, cushioned socks can reduce the ground feel and natural sensory feedback that makes barefoot shoes so special, so keeping them thin helps you get the most out of your PKs.
Sock or no sock?
It's completely up to you and what feels best! Some people love the full barefoot feel without socks, while others prefer the extra layer. There's no wrong answer, just do what works for you!
About Barefoot Shoes
What Are Barefoot Shoes and Why Should I Wear Them?
Barefoot shoes (also called minimalist shoes) are designed to let your feet move and function as naturally as possible—almost like you're walking barefoot, but with protection from the ground!
What makes a shoe "barefoot"?
Barefoot shoes have three key features:
- Wide toe box: Plenty of room for your toes to spread naturally, the way they're meant to
- Zero drop: Your heel and toes sit at the same level (no raised heel), promoting better posture and natural movement
- Flexible, thin sole: A thin, flexible sole that lets your feet feel the ground and move naturally, while still protecting you from sharp objects and rough surfaces
Why choose barefoot shoes?
Traditional shoes often squeeze toes together, elevate the heel, and have thick, rigid soles that restrict natural foot movement. Over time, this can weaken foot muscles and affect balance and posture. Barefoot shoes allow your feet to strengthen naturally and move the way they were designed to!
What Makes PaperKrane Shoes 'Barefoot'?
What makes PaperKrane shoes 'barefoot'?
All PaperKrane shoes are designed around our Four F's, the key principles that make our shoes truly barefoot:
FLAT: Zero-drop design for natural posture so that your heel and toes sit at the same level, promoting better alignment and allowing your body to move the way it's meant to.
FEATHER LIGHT: Minimal weight for unrestricted movement. Our shoes are incredibly lightweight, so you barely feel them on your feet, giving you the freedom to move naturally without being weighed down.
FOOT SHAPED: Wide toe box allows natural toe splay so there's plenty of room for your toes to spread wide and wiggle freely, just like they do when you're barefoot. No more cramped, squeezed toes!
FLEXIBLE: Our soles move with your foot's natural motion. Our thin, flexible soles bend and flex with every step, allowing your feet to move naturally and feel the ground beneath you.
The PK difference:
Every single pair of PaperKrane shoes, whether they're leather, vegan, cotton canvas, for adults or kids, is built with these Four F's in mind. It's what makes them true barefoot shoes and why your feet will thank you!

How Thick Are PaperKrane Soles?
Our soles measure 3-4mm of rubber (including lugs) plus 3-4mm of foam inner on the footbed, for a total of approximately 6-8mm. This minimal thickness allows maximum ground connection while still providing protection.
I'm New to Barefoot Shoes, What Should I Expect?
It's completely normal for barefoot shoes to feel different at first! Your feet may need 1-2 weeks (or even a bit longer) to adjust to the natural freedom and space. This transition period is your feet waking up and strengthening—it's a good thing!

Are Barefoot Shoes Good For Kids?
Here's a friendly FAQ about barefoot shoes for kids:
Are barefoot shoes good for kids?
Absolutely! Barefoot shoes are especially beneficial for growing feet.
Why barefoot is brilliant for kids:
Children's feet are still developing, and barefoot shoes support this natural growth process by:
- Allowing natural development: Wide toe boxes and zero-drop soles let little feet grow and develop the way nature intended
- Improving balance and coordination: Flexible soles help kids feel the ground beneath them, which strengthens their proprioception (body awareness) and balance
- Strengthening foot muscles: Without the restrictions of traditional shoes, kids' feet get stronger with every step, run, and jump
The best part?
Our fun designs mean kids actually want to wear healthy shoes! No more battles over footwear—they'll be excited to put them on.

Supporting Sensory & Disability Needs
Can I Use NDIS Funding To Purchase PaperKrane Shoes?
Absolutely! We're here to support NDIS participants in purchasing our footwear. While we're not a registered NDIS provider, our shoes may be eligible for purchase using NDIS funding under the Low-Cost Assistive Technology category.
We've made it super simple with two options:
- Request an invoice first: Fill out our NDIS Order Form and we'll generate an invoice for you to submit to your plan manager (or pay directly if you're self-managed)
- Purchase first, claim later: Buy through our website, then email us at contact@paperkrane.com.au with your order number to request an NDIS-compliant invoice
For complete details, eligibility requirements, and step-by-step instructions, visit our dedicated NDIS Orders & PKs page. We're here to make the process as stress-free as possible!
How Do PaperKrane Shoes Support Those With Sensory Needs?
Our barefoot design is naturally supportive for people with sensory processing differences! Here's why:
The wide toe box reduces pressure points and that squeezed-in feeling that can be overwhelming. The thin, flexible sole provides better proprioceptive feedback, which means your feet can actually feel the ground, helping with body awareness and balance.
Many parents tell us that our shoes have been game-changers for their children with autism, ADHD, or sensory processing disorders who've struggled with traditional footwear that feels restrictive or uncomfortable. The natural, foot-shaped design just makes sense for sensitive feet!
Are PaperKrane Shoes Suitable For People With Mobility Or Coordination Challenges?
es! Our lightweight, flexible design and natural foot positioning can be really helpful for various mobility needs.
The wide toe box provides a stable base, while the zero-drop sole promotes better balance and more natural movement patterns. Our slip-on styles are particularly popular with people who have dexterity challenges, no fiddly laces or complicated fastenings to deal with!
That said, everyone's needs are unique, so we always recommend chatting with your healthcare team to make sure our shoes are the right fit for your specific situation. We're also here to answer any questions, just reach out via email: contact@paperkrane.com.au.
Can I Wear PaperKrane Shoes With Foot And Ankle Supports Like AFOs, Braces, And Orthotics?
Great question! The answer depends on the type of support you're using and how your PKs fit.
AFOs (Ankle-Foot Orthoses) and braces:
Our shoes can work with some AFOs and braces, but it really depends on the size and design of your specific device. The key is making sure there's enough room inside the shoe. Some customers find success by:
- Sizing up to accommodate the extra volume
- Removing the insole (if your style has one) to create more space
- Choosing our high-top or mid-top styles that have more room around the ankle
Orthotics and insoles:
Our removable insoles make it easy to swap in your custom orthotics! Just pop out our insole and replace it with yours. Keep in mind that adding orthotics will change the barefoot experience and ground feel that PKs are designed for, but we totally understand that everyone's needs are different.
The best approach:
Because everyone's supports are unique, we recommend measuring both your foot with the device and checking our size charts carefully. If you're unsure, reach out to us at contact@paperkrane.com.au with details about your device, we're happy to help you figure out if PKs will work for you!
We also suggest consulting with your healthcare provider or orthotist to make sure barefoot shoes are appropriate for your specific situation.
For more information about how PKs work as adaptive footwear, check out our page on PKs as Adaptive Footwear.
Can I Wear PaperKrane Shoes If I Have Foot Problems?
While many of our customers find barefoot shoes helpful for various foot issues, we recommend consulting with a healthcare professional if you have specific medical concerns. Many podiatrists actually support barefoot-style footwear because it encourages natural foot function and strength.
We're not medical experts, but we're always happy to chat about how our shoes are designed and answer any questions you might have. Your health comes first!
